Severn Valley Railway

Average: (2 votes; 2)

An affinity partner of NFU Mutual, Severn Valley Railway provides a rare glimpse into the past.

The famous line opened in 1862, and played a crucial part in the transport business for more than 100 years. Now principally used for leisure, the railway attracts a quarter of a million visitors every year and is a ‘quality-assured’ visitor attraction.

The Severn Valley itself is a largely unspoiled area of British countryside, with many of the views accessible only from the railway. The journey, which follows the meandering River Severn before crossing the 200-foot Victoria Bridge, is punctuated by quaint and traditional country stations which give access to local villages and walks.

Sitting back and enjoying the tradition and history of the Severn Valley Railway isn’t for everybody - but the railway also caters for those who prefer a more hands-on approach.

Once in a lifetime - Severn Valley Railway Experience

Severn Valley Railway offers a ‘Footplate Experience’ that enables visitors to drive and fire a steam locomotive.

A variety of courses are available, but each includes a full safety briefing, guidance on how the locomotive works and the opportunity to pull coaches along the track for a number of miles.

The experiences provide a once in a lifetime opportunity, and are a great way in which to get a feel for times gone by.

In addition to the footplate experience, Severn Valley Railway also provides a valuable educational element. The Engine House is now home to an education centre which helps to teach the history and science behind this famous mode of transport.

Attractions in the Engine House include steam locomotives in prime condition, railway artifacts and an exhibition area which details how the railway really works.
