Holiday planning with elderly relatives

Average: (1 votes; 2)

Many families enjoy taking holidays together, and there is no reason for this to change once family members are older. A little holiday planning helps to ensure a fun and healthy trip with elderly relatives. Here are a few tips to get you started.

If any of your party have mobility problems make sure before you leave that there are disabled accesses and lifts available so they are able to get around during the trip. It is also a good idea to check out the local amenities to make sure you have everything you need for a happy and healthy stay. A good guidebook is strongly recommended!

If relatives are on medication make sure that you have enough for the duration of the trip, particularly if you are travelling abroad. It is also a good idea to ask your GP for a referral letter to take with you, just in case you do need to get any treatment while you are away.

If you are going on a cruise for your holiday there are a few things you should consider to keep the elderly members of your party safe. The ship can be very bumpy due to the waves and currents, so if you have elderly people with you who are unsteady on their feet it is a good idea to have a wheelchair to get around. Also be aware of the strength of the sun when you are sitting on the deck of a cruise ship and ensure you and your family are all adequately protected.

Local authorities may also be able to help fund holidays for the elderly. Some councils give grants, while others organise holidays themselves. Most local authorities have strict eligibility criteria, but if you think you may be entitled to some help try contacting your local council to see what they offer.

The ‘Know Before You Go’ campaign, run by the Foreign and Commonwealth office, aims to promote safe and enjoyable travel for all British nationals holidaying abroad. To find out more about the campaign and the advice they offer please visit www.fco.gov.uk.

Most importantly, have a great time!
