Vintage tractor restoration

Average: (0 votes; 0)

Restoring tractors is a specialised hobby that is becoming more and more popular. While some people simply want to rejuvenate a tired-old tractor they’ve inherited, for others the hobby is triggered by nostalgia - a chance for a long drive down memory lane.

Once the restoration project is complete, many people put the tractor back on the field to work - while others simply want to show off their motor at vintage tractor rallies and shows across the country.

Depending on the age and condition of the tractor, and the availability of parts, some restoration projects can last for years. These years can be filled bonding with a fellow enthusiast, such as a child or parent, working together as the project takes shape. Once complete, the feeling of satisfaction is unforgettable.

Make the project a little easier

When restoring a vintage tractor, it helps to have a wealth of knowledge on your motor, particularly where things go! This is not a small job and experience is beneficial when changing internal parts, peeling paint off, and replacing seats, among other things.

Some restorers find out all there is to know about the life of their tractor, including where it was first bought – this is not a necessity, but it adds to the charm of the project.

Finding vintage tractor parts

You can use any type of part when reconstructing a farm tractor, but for a genuine restoration it needs to be as authentic to its former self as possible.

Tracking down vintage tractor parts takes time, but locating a hard-to-find piece can be almost as rewarding as finishing the project itself. Look at Vintage Tractor Spares to source the right parts for your tractor.

It may well help your search to find out what year your vintage tractor was made. Looking at its serial number is usually the best way - this also tells you the model. You can look on the internet, or ask one of the clubs, to cross-reference the number and identify your tractor. Try Old Tractor Store.

Support

There are a number of clubs full of like-minded people who can share stories and offer advice... and maybe even help out with the restoration. Look at Tractors and Farming for a list of clubs you can join.

Tools

Tools can be expensive, so it helps if you can borrow them. Clubs might lend you tools if you’re a member.

Space

These are big machines, unlikely to be moved throughout the whole restoration project. You’ll need a garage or barn to keep yours in if possible.
