A pre-sales test drive is essential. Here's a checklist which should help you make the most of your drive:

• Make sure you start the engine from cold by feeling the bonnet before you begin. If the engine is already warm it may be that the seller is hoping to conceal a starting problem.
• Take as much time as possible - simply driving once around the block will not push the car enough to reveal any faults.
• Drive at varied speeds on different road types to get a real idea of how the car performs.
• Test out the gear box. Try all gears, including reverse, and make sure there is no 'crunching' as you change gear.
• Try out some low speed manoeuvres, such as a reverse park. Is visibility good enough?
• Check the brakes - they should stop the car in a straight line. Don't forget to try out the hand-brake too.
• How does the car sound? If there are any noises or rattles that you can't determine the cause of, it would be wise to bring these up with the seller.
• Don't forget to check the obvious things - lights, windows and central locking for example. Also check the stereo, if that is included in the proposed sale.
• Once you've finished your drive, leave the car to cool down before checking under the bonnet for any leaks of oil, water or other fluids.
