Sat Nav advice - making the most of your satellite navigation

Average: (1 votes; 5)

Satellite navigation systems have revolutionised the way we plan car journeys, and can make life on the road far less stressful.

However, while they are designed to keep us on the straight and narrow, Sat Nav devices can sometimes lead us astray.

Just like other in-car technology, Sat Navs can be as distracting as they are helpful – causing bad driving habits and a lack of focus on the road.

By following our top Sat Nav tips, you can make the most of the technology while retaining good driving practices.

Eyes on the road

Program the Sat Nav before you start the engine – never while you’re driving.

Although many models are touch-screen, designed to be programmed quickly, you’ll still be taking your eyes off the road and a hand off the wheel. Be safe and pull over – even if you only need to adjust the volume.

Common sense

Sat Nav is no replacement for common sense. If a road looks wrong to you, or a street sign indicates the same, this must take precedence over your Sat Nav instruction.

An over-reliance on satellite navigation has found drivers traversing fields, stuck in side streets and even driving on railway tracks.

Keep up to date

With new roundabouts and bypasses appearing all over the country, it’s important to keep your Sat Nav up to date.

The official website of your Sat Nav manufacturer is likely to have regular updates available for you to download, helping you avoid any moments of confusion on newer roads.

You know best

If you’re driving a large vehicle, or towing a caravan, it’s important to remember that your Sat Nav has no regard for this. A road that may be perfectly accessible to a smaller car may not be suitable for you.

Similarly, estimated arrival times are calculated on the basis of a vehicle moving at average road speed for each part of the journey. If you are towing, you can expect the journey to take longer – so plan accordingly.

That said, some new Sat Nav systems coming to market allow you to input the weight of your vehicle before you set off. A route and journey time is then displayed which takes these details into account.

Take it with you

When you arrive safely at your destination, remove the Sat Nav and take it out of the car with you.

If your Sat Nav leaves suction marks on the windscreen, remove them before exiting your vehicle. The sight of them could interest thieves, who may expect the device to be left in the car.
